Fans were left puzzled after the BCCI released a cryptic video showing Sanju Samson sitting idly on a chair, just hours before India's final training session ahead of the match against the United Arab Emirates in the Asia Cup 2025. The clip quickly sparked speculation over Samson’s inclusion in the playing XI, as the Kerala batter’s spot has come under scrutiny following the return of Shubman Gill, who has been named vice-captain of the T20I squad. Gill, consistent as an opener in the IPL, is expected to reclaim his slot, potentially pushing Samson down the order.
India, the defending champions, will aim to kickstart their tournament strongly, and fans are keenly watching the team combinations for the high-stakes opener. Samson’s position has been a talking point, especially after his impressive run under head coach Gautam Gambhir, scoring over 400 runs in 14 T20Is. His versatility, powerful hitting, and experience make him a valuable asset in both top-order and finisher roles.
Here are some of the reactions:

Amid the uncertainty, cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar previously suggested that leaving Samson out would be a mistake. Gavaskar suggested that the management could use Samson at No. 3 or lower down the order while also considering him for wicketkeeping duties over Jitesh Sharma.
Samson’s domestic and franchise numbers further strengthen Gavaskar’s call. Across 134 innings at No. 3, he has amassed 4,136 runs at an average of 35 and a strike-rate of 137, including 31 fifties and five centuries. His ability to clear the ropes makes him an ideal candidate for multiple batting roles.
With India facing a packed schedule leading into next year’s T20 World Cup, the Asia Cup serves as a testing ground for combinations. For Samson, the tournament could be a defining stage to prove that he belongs in India’s first-choice XI, ensuring the Men in Blue approach their title defence with both firepower and balance.
