Ben Simmons' future in the NBA has once again become a topic of discussion. Recent reports suggested he might be considering retirement, but the three-time All-Star has firmly shut down the speculation. On social media, when a fan asked if he was retiring, Simmons responded with a single word: "No," putting the rumours to rest.
The denial comes after a turbulent few years in the 29-year-old Australian's career, which has been marked by injuries, mental health struggles, and other challenges.
Selected first overall in the 2016 NBA Draft, Simmons had a promising start with the Philadelphia 76ers. He was named Rookie of the Year in his debut season and earned three consecutive All-Star selections early in his career. During his prime, he consistently averaged around 16 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists, showcasing his all-around ability.
However, recent seasons have been much tougher. After missing the entire 2021-22 season due to mental health issues and a back injury, Simmons' performance never fully recovered. Over his last 108 games, his averages dropped to 5.9 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 5.8 assists.
Return to Australia sparks speculation
Simmons' recent Instagram post, captioned "The land down under #australia," fueled speculation further. The relaxed, casual images led fans to believe he might be contemplating stepping away from the NBA.
Now a free agent, Simmons reportedly walked away from a chance to re-sign with the L.A. Clippers and declined an offer from the New York Knicks. Adding to the uncertainty, his agent has also parted ways with him.
Uncertain future and NBL hopes
Despite his clear social media denial, Simmons' recent actions have opened new avenues of speculation. Several Australian basketball veterans have expressed hope that he might join the NBL, suggesting he could become the league's top player and perhaps reignite his passion for the sport away from the pressures of the NBA.
For now, Simmons' next steps remain undecided. No formal announcement has been made, leaving fans and analysts to speculate on what the future holds for the former All-Star.
