With the top Indian track and field stars prioritising the Federation Cup later this month, the first Indian Open athletics meet here on Tuesday will be a chance for some of the rising stars to push themselves and improve performances.
Among those will be Jyoti Rakesh, the 22-year old champion at the National Games and considered among the more talented of the next generation javelin throwers. Jyoti, targeting the 58m mark to qualify for the Asian Championships — her best is 58.49m, the all-time fifth best Indian throw — will be among the favourites.
As will be Dipanshu Sharma, the Asian Under-20 champion last year and, although his personal best is still only 71.21m, is highly rated to join the 80m club this year. Along with Rohan Yadav — silver medallist at the Asian meet — Dipanshu will be among the few exciting talents at the competition that has only a couple of experienced names entered for participation.
These include Delhi Sarthak Bhambri in the 400m and Tanya Chaudhary in the women’s hammer throw at the War Hero Stadium. Competitions will be held in all throws, high jump and triple jump along with track races from 400-10,000m for men and 400m, 5000m and 10,000m for women.
