India ODI captain Rohit Sharma has put retirement rumours to rest, at least for now, as he appeared fit and focused in a recent net session, sporting the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) logo prominently on his helmet. The video, shared widely on social media, shows Rohit going through his drills with intensity and precision, giving fans a glimpse of his preparation ahead of India’s upcoming ODI series against Australia.
The 38-year-old will mark his return to international cricket after nearly eight months, following his retirements from Tests and T20Is earlier this year. While the cricketing world speculates about the possibility of this Australia tour being Rohit’s last ODI assignment, the skipper seems determined to remain match-ready and contribute to India’s cause in the limited-overs format.
"I am here again. It feels really good," Rohit said in the video.
Rohit is expected to lead the Men in Blue in the three-match series starting October 19, which could be his first international outing since stepping away from the longer formats. The duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli has often been seen as central to India’s ODI plans, and their presence on this tour has sparked conversations about whether this could be the swan song for India’s batting stalwarts in the 50-over format before the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Despite speculation, decisions about Rohit’s and Kohli’s international futures will ultimately depend on the Board, including chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir. Fitness and form over the coming months will play a crucial role in determining whether India’s experienced campaigners continue to feature in the national setup or gradually step aside for the next generation.
For now, Rohit’s crisp strokes in the net, helmet proudly displaying the BCCI emblem, have provided a reassuring sight for fans eager to see their captain back in action.
