The world was abuzz on Tuesday with the news of American singer Taylor Swift's engagement to American football star Travis Kelce. Fans of the couple, including a few TV news anchors, paused their routines to celebrate and send their congratulations. US Open commentators were no exception.
During the first-round match between World No. 1 Jannik Sinner and unseeded Vit Kopriva, US Open commentators Brad Gilbert and Jason Goodall came across the news of the engagement.
Gilbert and Goodall briefly interrupted the broadcast to discuss the announcement that had taken the world by storm. For several minutes, the two commentators focused entirely on Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, leaving aside Sinner's dominant performance on the court.
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce announced their engagement on Instagram with the caption: "Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married."
In the middle of the second set, Gilbert remarked, "Taylor Swift is engaged." Goodall responded, "With?"
To pre-empt the flood of messages from the couple's enthusiastic fanbase, Goodall quickly added, "A new record, or?"
Gilbert then clarified: "She is engaged. Taylor Swift is getting married."
Later, the US Open's official X handle congratulated the newly engaged couple with a clip from their previous visit to Arthur Ashe Stadium, writing: "I wanna be your end game. Congratulations to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce on their engagement!"
While neither are associated with tennis-Taylor makes music and Travis plays in the NFL-the couple has a history at the US Open. Last year, they attended together, publicly confirming their relationship.
Speaking to GQ magazine last year, Kelce reflected on their outing: "When you see me hanging out at the US Open with Taylor, it may look like the two of us are partying. But I'm just enjoying the fun of being at this really cool event that I always wanted to go to with the person that I love."
The couple attended the event alongside Kelce's teammate Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany. With their recent engagement, it will be interesting to see whether Swift and Kelce attend any US Open matches together this year.
Notably, Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek also wished Taylor Swift after her first-round match on Tuesday. A fangirl, Swiatek said he was happy for Swift, cheekily wishing "Hopefully this will stick forever".
