Faf du Plessis Condemns US Gun Culture After Charlie Kirk Shooting Death

Former South African cricket captain Faf du Plessis has expressed shock at the death of U.S. conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot during a speaking event in Utah on Wednesday.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), du Plessis wrote, “RIP Charlie Kirk. I’ll never understand America and why everyone can just have a gun.”

Kirk, a key ally of U.S. President Donald Trump and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was killed by a single gunshot while addressing nearly 3,000 people at Utah Valley University. As reported by Reuters, authorities said the shot came from a rooftop sniper’s nest, sparking a large-scale manhunt.

du Plessis’ reaction drew attention for cutting through political lines, focusing instead on the country’s gun culture. The 40-year-old, who led South Africa in all three formats and is currently active on the T20 franchise circuit. He played for the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League in 2025. He has also previously led the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and also represented the Chennai Super Kings as well.

The former skipper highlighted the broader social issues beyond cricket. His post echoed sentiments of many global athletes and public figures who have questioned the easy accessibility of firearms in America.

Former boxing champion Ryan Garcia was also among the other athletes who shared his reaction to the news on social media.

"You can feel the silence in the air, you can feel a moment of silence in the heavens for Charlie Kirk. Rest in heaven Charlie Kirk," he wrote.

Another boxing star, Jake Paul, also shared his views on the same. "Charlie Kirk got shot for telling the truth. That is literally it. What a mentally sick time we are living through. We need god more than ever. Praying for Charlie’s family and praying for these evil people to heal," he wrote.

The New York Yankees, one of the most iconic baseball teams in the USA, also held a moment of silence in memory of Charlie Kirk.
