Manchester City will be without striker Omar Marmoush for Sunday’s Manchester derby after the Egyptian forward suffered a knee injury while on international duty, the club confirmed on Wednesday. The news adds to City’s growing injury crisis ahead of one of the biggest matches of the Premier League season.
Marmoush lasted only a few minutes in Egypt’s 0-0 World Cup qualifying draw with Burkina Faso on Tuesday before going down from a challenge. The team doctor confirmed that the 26-year-old sustained a bruised knee ligament, forcing him to retire from the match.
“Initial results on a scan performed in Egypt indicate he will not be available for the Manchester derby on Sunday, and he will now return to Manchester for further assessment and to begin his rehabilitation,” the club said in an official statement.
Marmoush joined Manchester City in January last season and made an immediate impact, finishing his debut campaign with eight goals and four assists across all competitions. However, he has yet to score this season, making his absence a significant blow for Pep Guardiola as City look to regain momentum in the league.
The injury comes at a difficult time for City, who are currently 13th in the Premier League standings after three rounds, with just one victory. Guardiola’s squad has already been hit by long-term injuries to Rayan Cherki and Mateo Kovacic, while Phil Foden and Savinho are also doubts ahead of the high-profile derby. Marmoush’s unavailability further reduces options in attack and puts more pressure on the manager to adjust his game plan.
Marmoush’s skill and pace had been seen as key to City’s hopes of turning their season around, and losing him for such a crucial fixture will require other players to step up. Guardiola will now have to rely on his remaining forwards to provide the spark against Manchester United, a team eager to take advantage of City’s current struggles.
The striker is expected to return to Manchester for more detailed scans and to begin rehabilitation under the club’s medical team. City fans will hope that Marmoush can recover quickly and return to full fitness, but his absence in the derby is now certain.
With injuries mounting, Guardiola faces a challenging week as he tries to steady a side that is still searching for consistency early in the season.
