Manchester United's pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo has hit a snag as Brentford reportedly turned down their initial offer of £62.5 million ($85.7 million), ESPN sources reveal.
The Red Devils have identified Mbeumo as a key target and have intensified discussions with Brentford in recent days.
However, Brentford is firm on their valuation, demanding a higher fee than the £62.5 million currently proposed, which includes add-ons. The club believes Mbeumo's value has increased significantly following his impressive performance of 20 Premier League goals last season.
Sources indicate that interested clubs will need to exceed £65 million to secure the 25-year-old's services.
Further negotiations are planned between Manchester United and Brentford. Nevertheless, sources suggest that United are determined not to be drawn into a bidding war.
Despite missing out on European football next season, funds are available to strengthen Ruben Amorim's squad. However, sources have indicated that the club intends to maintain a "disciplined" approach to transfer fees and wages.
Manchester United have already secured the signing of Matheus Cunha by triggering his £62.5 million release clause at Wolves. Cunha, who scored 15 Premier League goals last season, is 26 years old, slightly older than Mbeumo.
Despite this initial setback, Manchester United remains optimistic that Mbeumo is keen on a move to Old Trafford.
There is still hope that an agreement can be reached, allowing the Cameroon international to join the squad in time for the start of preseason training on July 7.
