Chelsea has reached an agreement with Borussia Dortmund to secure the services of Jamie Gittens in a deal potentially worth €65 million ($76.1m), ESPN sources confirm.
Negotiations between the two clubs intensified during the Club World Cup, where both Chelsea and Dortmund were participants. Face-to-face discussions in the United States facilitated the breakthrough in recent days.
The 20-year-old winger has reportedly agreed to a seven-year contract with the Premier League side and is scheduled to undergo a medical examination within the next 48 hours.
Despite FIFA regulations allowing teams to register up to two additional players for the Club World Cup, Gittens will be ineligible to represent Chelsea in the competition due to his prior appearance for Dortmund as a substitute against Fluminense in the group stage, making him cup-tied.
Prior to reaching this agreement, Chelsea had two previous offers turned down by Dortmund. The highest bid, valued at €50 million including add-ons, did not meet the German club's valuation of the player.
Gittens will be joining a growing number of former Manchester City players at Stamford Bridge, following the recent acquisition of Liam Delap from Ipswich Town for £30m. Cole Palmer and Tosin Adarabioyo also share a past with Manchester City.
Chelsea's pursuit of attacking reinforcements will not end with the Gittens deal. The club is also reportedly interested in Brighton forward João Pedro, but faces competition from Newcastle for his signature.
